About kinyan hadaf

Over the last several years the amount of Daf yomi shiurim and people learning the daf yomi has increased exponentially. However, the learning of the daf for many people has become passive in nature either listening to a shiur or reading the daf with the interpretation of the artscroll Gemara. For some people they truly walk away from that learning knowing the respective daf, but for many of us we walk away from the shiur and if we were asked a question about the Gemara we might find that we do not truly understand it very well at all. This is all quite normal as we are learning a large amount of material through listening or reading where we are not working through it ourselves.

We are starting a new program called Kinyan Hadaf which has 2 separate parts to enhance the Daf Yomi experience. The first part is called “Grasp the daf” which is meant to assist someone who learned the daf either in shiur or who learned the daf using a gemara with an explanation to ensure they themselves alone can read through and understand the daf. This is done by setting up a chavrusa with someone else who learned the daf and each one will “teach” the daf to his chavrusa. Through the learning of the daf one on one and explaining it to your chavrusa you will be able to get a grasp of the steps of the gemara.

This preferably should be done in conjunction with the magid shiur so if you have any questions, you will not get stuck.

The next step for those that want is to work on remembering the daf now that he fully understands the steps of the Gemara  is to do one more review of the daf but not to learn it straight but to just remember the steps. Once you do the first review inside the Gemara, then try to review the steps by heart and only looking inside if you miss a step. This does not take long and after you know it by heart try to continue to review the daf even if you do not remember every step several more times during the day even without a Gemara whenever you have free time. The next day do the new daf and review the first daf and continue in that matter for future dapim.
